Alice Springs

Alice Springs is a unique part of Australia’s tourism. Sitting in the middle of the country, it’s a place quite unlike anywhere else in Australia – which can often leave those planning to visit confused. No more! Here’s our guide on how to plan a trip to Alice Springs.

When to Visit

Alice Springs is most popular between April and early October. The temperature sits around the high 20s (Celsius) on average, though June and July are colder, and the humidity is low. May is often regarded as the best time to visit the Northern Territory.

How Long

How long you spend in the Red Centre depends on what you want to see. The town of Alice Springs itself is relatively small. A highlights tour of Alice Springs takes only half a day, and situates visitors well to then explore on their own. Outside of the township, the possibilities are endless. Three days or so within the town itself is ample to explore everything Alice has to offer, and it’s a good idea to set aside at least a few days to explore the natural beauty of the wild surrounds.

What to See

Within Alice Springs are a number of attractions. The School of the Air, Alice Springs Desert Park, Reptile Centre, Anzac Hill, Telegraph Station, Olive Pink Botanical Gardens and Royal Flying Doctor Service are all highlights of the town that shouldn’t be missed.

When people come to Alice Springs though, they usually come for the landscapes. Alice Springs is located within the stunning MacDonnell Ranges, which host many walking trails and lookouts over the unique desert environment. The famous Larapinta Trail in particular is a popular experience. Kings Canyon, the Olgas and even Uluru (Ayers Rock) are easily accessible from Alice Springs, making it a great base from which to explore.

Visiting Ayers Rock

For most visitors to Alice Springs, the trip isn’t complete without also seeing Ayers Rock. It is of course entirely possible to hire a car in Alice Springs and drive to Ayers Rock yourself, but tours of the area – particularly those which include other attractions such as Kings Canyon — are highly recommended.
